Race 2: A Tiny Victory?

SKUNK places 5th in heat 1 of race 2.

It wasn’t a podium finish for SKUNK in race 2 of season 1. In fact, SKUNK wouldn’t even qualify for the main race, placing 5th in heat 1 with an official time of 01:57:47. However, considering he started the day slotted at 6th position based on the random heat selection, moving up one place could be considered a small win in a very tough and challenging start to the season.

“In the first race I moved down from (starting) 5th to 7th, so that was really embarrassing. At least this time I moved up. Still didn’t get past the first heat, but…….I’m trying, man, I’m trying,” an exhausted-looking SKUNK told the press moments after crossing the finish line.

After returning from the locker room (one would assume any other racer would shower, but it IS SKUNK we are talking about), he found his way to the top of the stands to take in the rest of the day’s action.

The second race in season 1 of the Racing Marbles League resulted in a win by Quicksilver, who took control from the the start of lap 6, passing Turbo Turtle for the lead and never letting go. Panda stayed somewhat close behind but could never find the burst of speed necessary to overcome the gap, finishing in third after Crimson Lady made a stunning pass in the closing seconds of the final lap that could well be the highlight of the season thus far. Predator, who had the pole position to start the main race, was overtaken by the rest of the competition quickly and crossed the finish line last.

With 4 races to go in season 1 SKUNK finds himself 31 points out of first place with only 8 points compared to the 39 held by Finn C. Artilage and Panda. Even a top 10 finish for the season seems like a tall order at this point, but SKUNK showed no signs of surrender.

“I may be in last place in the total standings, but I’m only 4 points behind Sinatra (19th), right? That’s doable. Baby steps, man, baby steps. It’s like a marathon–don’t think so much about the guy way up there; you just gotta look at the guy directly in front of you and try to pass him. If you continue to do that, eventually those little steps will get you somewhere.”
